Adult dogs may also be trained with a prong collar, until other collars are suitable. Harnesses and head collars are not recommended. A 5-foot or longer leash is required for these classes.

S.T.A.R. Puppy
:

Your puppy will learn skills toward earning his or her AKC Socialization, Training, Activity, (and) Responsibility (S.T.A.R.) Puppy certificate. The S.T.A.R. Puppy certificate program fosters a bond between puppy and owner, as well as starting good learning habits that will serve a puppy over its lifetime.

The elements of the S.T.A.R. Puppy program include:
  • Owner Behaviors
  • Puppy Behaviors
  • Pre-Canine Good Citizen Test Behaviors
All of these behaviors have practical uses. They can be of help to new or first-time puppy owners, regardless of whether they go on to more formal obedience classes or not. They can also provide a firm foundation for future service dogs or competition obedience classes.

Puppy Manners Classes

If your puppy is unruly and unwilling to settle down, he or she might benefit from a manners class. While very basic obedience is given a nod, the focus for this course is on learning to be a good puppy at home and at the vet. Your puppy will learn to:

  • pay attention to you when his or her name is spoken,
  • allow handling of head, teeth, body, and paws,
  • be lured into sitting, standing, and lying down position,
  • demonstrate basic food impulse control
  • remain quiet while his or her collar or harness is applied
  • play nicely with a toy without snatching or biting

Puppy manners class is available both in small groups (no more than five puppies) or as private lessons. Extremely disruptive puppies may be asked to take manners classes first, before participating in other obedience lessons.
